Maela Puts Pirates Forward for Domestic Title

Orlando Pirates’ impressive domestic form has strengthened the belief that the club could be on the verge of a defining season, with former captain Innocent Maela convinced the current squad has the depth and drive to secure major honours.

The Buccaneers have already secured the MTN8 – a title they have now won four times consecutively – and will contest the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants next month.

Despite integrating more than ten new signings, Pirates have settled seamlessly under manager Abdeslam Ouaddou, establishing a clear rhythm and cohesion that Maela believes sets them apart from last season’s faltering league challenge.

Maela, who led the side in their 2023 title-push, says the squad looks “energised and complete”, with competition for places providing crucial momentum. He is confident Pirates can remain in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race deep into the campaign while also challenging for the Nedbank Cup.

“We already have a trophy this season, and we are gunning for a second one,” the 33-year-old defender said. “Pirates look really strong in the league because of the depth they have… how they are executing game plans in matches gives us confidence that this is our season and the league could be won.”

He also praised the club’s recruitment, crediting Ouaddou’s early impact after a shaky start to the season, adding: “He is showing everyone his capabilities and quality, and you can see through how the team is gelling and how they are playing.”

Pirates will next host Chippa United on 25 November, with a win set to draw them level with PSL table leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
